The Medicine in our Voices

Voice therapy singing circle facilitator and guest on yoga and community retreat at The Source Koh Phangan, Thailand

You didn’t think much of the community singing night when your friend invited you—just another well-meaning event you’d probably drift through quietly, trying not to be noticed. But the moment the group started humming together, something unexpected stirred inside you. It began with the simplest sound—your voice, barely audible, joining the gentle current of others. No one turned to look, no one singled you out. The hum grew into a living, breathing thing, and without even realizing it, you let yourself lean in. You felt the unfamiliar sensation of being part of something, not performing, not pretending—just being.

As the evening unfolded, the songs became more layered, call-and-response games mixing laughter with sound, and you found yourself opening up. You weren’t just singing anymore—you were listening, connecting, and something in you was loosening. That tight grip you’d kept on yourself, the one that said “don’t be too much” or “don’t get it wrong,” began to slip. For the first time in a long time, you didn’t feel like you had to edit who you were. Your voice belonged here, even when it cracked or missed a note. The group held you in recognition as an individual and as the same essence as themselves, and you held them in return. In those moments, you felt real—undeniably human.

By the time the last song began—a simple, looping round that wound all the voices together—you noticed tears just behind your eyes. Not sadness, exactly, but recognition. You had touched something deep and quiet, a sense of being connected not just to these people, but to something older and larger: the shared rhythm of being alive. As the final notes faded into silence, you sat there in the glow of it all, heart fuller, breath easier. You had shown up unsure, unseen—but now, you felt different. Known. Heard. And more yourself than you’d realized you could be.
